Jamieson’s of Shetland – a unique and sustainable quality yarn.
At Kastaniestrik, we value quality and sustainability and therefore our yarn comes exclusively from the Shetland Islands and 100% Shetland wool. We collaborate with the spinning mill Jamieson’s of Shetland, which is a sustainable company with a low carbon footprint. The raw wool is never transported more than 130 km from the local sheep breeders to the spinning mill, where all manufacturing processes from quality sorting to yarn spinning take place under the same roof. At the spinning mill, they dye the wool themselves and spin it into yarn, which is an incredible and unique craft, as 100% pure Shetland wool is traditionally considered too delicate to be spun, but the Jamieson family can.

It is a family company that for 5 generations has worked with the wool from the original Shetland sheep. With each generation that takes over the business, it becomes more of a lifestyle than a job. The Jamieson family are dedicated to making a living and passing on pure Shetland wool. For them, running the company is more of a lifestyle than a job, and each generation brings its own skills and ideas into the company, which is therefore in constant development and progress.
The Shetland wool – Close to nature
The Shetland sheep only have contact with humans in the summer, when the wool is sheared, the rest of the year they manage on their own in the harsh landscape and North Atlantic climate. These are unique conditions where the sheep develop the finest and softest wool and lambwool to withstand the tough weather.
The unique nature is also the inspiration for the many yarn shades, which together forms a picture of the beautiful Shetland islands. In our assortment you will find the full range of 225 Spindrift shades, 40 Ultra shades and 3 Cobweb Ultra shades, all of which are inspired by the distant islands’ stormy winter seas, fields of wild flowers, and beautiful sunsets. In addition, Spindrift yarn is available in 21 natural shades, which are spun from the natural shades of the wool and which all bear names from the Shetland dialect. The wool is carefully sorted and only a minimum of colour is added to ensure the uniformity of the shades.
